The woodland band plays on a tree stump under a smiling crescent Moon: a fox with a fiddle, a duckling with a trumpet, a frog with a banjo, a bluebird with a flute, a bunny with handbells and a chameleon with an accordion, among lanterns and fireflies.

Cooperative card game

A card game you win together.

The woodland band is playing a concert for the Moon, and everyone holds their cards facing out: you see every bandmate's notes, never your own. Send fireflies with hints, play the notes in order, and keep the candles lit.

It's in the workshop. This page gets its Play button the day the band takes the stage.

The twist

You see every card but yours.

Here's Juniper's hand, facing you. Juniper can't see it. Send a firefly: name one color or one number, and every matching card lights up.

  • Fox 2, red
  • Chameleon 5, every color
  • Bunny 1, white
  • Frog 2, green
  • Fox 4, red
Send Juniper a firefly

Colors

Numbers

Three cards light up: both foxes and the Chameleon, which plays in every color. Juniper learns those three are red (or the Chameleon), and the other two aren't.

Only the Chameleon lights up. It's every color at once, so a yellow hint marks it too.

The frog and the Chameleon light up: green, or the Chameleon.

Only the Chameleon lights up. Juniper learns it's blue or the Chameleon.

The bunny and the Chameleon light up: white, or the Chameleon.

Just the bunny. Juniper learns it's a 1, the first note of a melody, and the rest aren't.

The fox and the frog: both are 2s.

Just the second fox. Juniper learns it's a 4.

Just the Chameleon. A 5 finishes a melody, so Juniper knows to keep it safe.

No 3s in this hand, so 3 is greyed out: a hint has to light up at least one card.

Pourquoi c’est génial

You can't see your own cards. Play the song together.

  • Everyone's on the same team

Nobody wins alone and nobody gets knocked out. The whole table plays one song, so the youngest player's careful hint matters as much as anyone's.

  • You can't see your own cards

You see every bandmate's cards but never yours. Their hints are the only way to know what you're holding.

  • A band you can hear

Every note that lands joins the music. As the stage fills, more of the band plays along, and a perfect show is the whole band at once.

  • The Chameleon

A sixth section that's every color at once: a red hint marks the reds and the Chameleon. For a first game, the five-section band is one tap away.

  • It explains itself

Before you tap, every move says what it will do. The bots explain how they read hints, and the results replay each melody note by note.

  • One phone or many

Pass one phone round the table, fill seats with friendly bots, or play online on your own phones.

Your turn

Do one of three things.

Then it's the next bandmate's turn. Nobody can say what's in your hand, except with a hint.

  1. Send a firefly

Let a firefly out of the jar to give a bandmate a hint: one color or one number. There are eight in the jar.

  2. Play a note

Play one of your own cards, sight unseen. If it's the next note of its section, it joins the melody. If not, it's a sour note.

  3. Set one aside

Put a card on the discard pile, and a firefly comes home to the jar. Everyone can see what's been let go.

Every section climbs from 1 to 5.

Notes join the stump stage in order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Each musician has five poses, from a shy first note to a leaping finale, and finishing a melody brings a firefly home too.

Keep the candles lit.

A sour note snuffs a candle. Three, and the Moon falls asleep. Otherwise the show ends when the last card is drawn and everyone has played one more turn.

  • Wide awake
  • Drowsy: one candle left
  • Fast asleep

Your score is the music.

Every note on stage counts, out of 30. The Moon tells you how it went:

  1. 0–8The Moon is still waiting
  2. 9–14A gentle warm-up
  3. 15–19The clearing is listening
  4. 20–25A lovely concert
  5. 26–29The Moon is dancing!
  6. 30A perfect serenade!

Seven seconds of play

Hints fly, and sometimes a candle goes out.

A real game of five, with the sound off: you show Juniper their green cards, Juniper plays a green 2 the song already has (a sour note), and Pip sends Clover a hint about yellow.

The band

Six critters, one song.

One section each, one color each. Except the Chameleon, who plays them all.

Any color hint marks the Chameleon too, so a red hint means "red, or the Chameleon".

Play together

One phone, a few phones, or a few bots.

Two to five in the band, in any mix of people and bots.

  • One phone, passed round

Between turns a curtain drops, "Pass the device to Leo", so nobody ever sees their own cards.

  • Bots in the band

Easy, Bot or Clever bot. They use only what their seat can see, and How to play shows how they read your hints.

  • Online, on your own phones

Share a game code, a link or a QR code. The host sets the house rules and a turn timer, and anyone can pause.

  • The stage on a big screen

Table view puts the stage on a TV or laptop that holds no cards.

  • House rules

Friendly keeps hints on your cards. Classic plays by the book. Encore plays on until the song is perfect.

On a tablet or laptop the table turns sideways: every bandmate's hand on the left, the stage on the right.

Questions

Questions families ask

When can we play Firefly Serenade?

Not yet. Firefly Serenade is still in Qube's workshop, and it doesn't have a release date. The game is built and plays from start to finish, and it opens once its last checks are done. When it does, it will be free in your web browser, and this page will get its Play button. Until then, Qube's other games are free to play now at qubesoftware.com/apps.

What's a cooperative game we can play together on our phones?

Firefly Serenade is a cooperative card game for 2 to 5 players: everyone is on the same team, so you win or lose together. Each player holds their cards facing out, so you see everyone's cards but your own, and you help each other with hints to play a song in the right order. You can pass one phone around, play on your own phones online with a game code, or fill seats with bots. It's coming soon, free in the browser, from Qube.

How many people can play?

Two to five, in any mix of people and bots. One person can play with up to four bot bandmates, a family can share one phone (a curtain hides each player's own cards between turns), or everyone can play on their own phone online. With two or three players everyone holds five cards; with four or five, four cards.

How do you play Firefly Serenade?

Everyone holds their cards facing out, so you can see your bandmates' cards but not your own. On your turn, do one thing: send a firefly to give a bandmate a hint (name one color or one number, and every matching card in their hand lights up), play one of your own cards, or set one aside to bring a firefly back to the jar. A played card joins its section's melody if it's the next note, from 1 to 5; if not, it's a sour note and a candle goes out. Three sour notes and the Moon falls asleep. Your score is every note on stage, out of 30.

Will it be free? Does it need a download or an account?

It's planned as a free game that plays in your web browser, with nothing to download and no account. The game as built has no ads, no in-game purchases and no store of any kind. Online play asks only for a name (up to 16 characters) and a critter to play as.

Is Firefly Serenade safe for kids?

It's built to be. There are no ads, no purchases and no chat: online, players can only send six ready-made reactions (Wow!, Bravo!, Oops, Hmm…, Love it and GG), and the only thing anyone types is a name. There's no public matchmaking, so you only play with people you give your game's code or link to. Games on one phone or against bots stay on your device, and online games are deleted automatically: an unstarted lobby after a day, a game 14 days after its last move.

Can we play on different phones?

Yes. One person starts an online game and shares its five-letter code, a link or a QR code, and everyone joins on their own phone, tablet or computer. The host chooses the house rules and a turn timer (30, 60 or 120 seconds, or none) and can add bots. Anyone can pause, and a bot covers for a player who steps away until they're back. Table view can show the stage on a TV or laptop.

How long does a game take?

Usually 15 to 30 minutes. A concert is about 70 to 80 turns shared around the table (the game's own simulations), so it depends on how long each player thinks; bots take their turns quickly.

What ages is Firefly Serenade for?

We suggest 8 and up. Players read short hints, remember what they were told about their cards (the reminders on each card help), and work out what to play. Because everyone is on one team, younger children can play alongside a grown-up.

What languages and devices will it support?

Firefly Serenade is in English. It's built to run in a web browser on phones, tablets and computers, upright or sideways, with no download.
