Quick setup

  1. Open Backpocket. It appears in your Mac's menu bar.
  2. Copy ordinary text in another app.
  3. Press Shift-Command-V to open Quick Paste near your pointer.
  4. Type to search, use the arrow keys to choose an item, and press Return. You can also click an item or use Command-1 through Command-0 for a visible result.
  5. Backpocket copies the item to your clipboard, returns you to the app you were using, and reminds you to press Command-V.
  6. Press Command-V to paste.

Use the menu-bar icon to pause capture, see recent clips, open Settings, open the full History window, or view the Privacy Report.

Save and reuse a prompt

  1. Open Quick Paste with Shift-Command-V.
  2. Select an eligible text clip and press Command-S. You can also press Command-K and choose Save as Prompt.
  3. Press Command-P to switch Quick Paste to Prompts.
  4. Search or choose the saved prompt. Backpocket copies it to the clipboard.
  5. Press Command-V in the destination app.

Open the main window and choose Prompts to create, edit, title, tag, duplicate, delete, import, or export prompts. AI Tool is optional organization metadata, not an integration; choosing it never launches or contacts another service. Only text can be saved as a prompt. Concealed copies never persist.

Import and export prompts

Import and Export use the standard macOS open or save panel. Backpocket can read or write only the file you explicitly select, does not create a security-scoped bookmark, and remembers nothing about the selected location. Canceling the panel changes nothing.

Re-importing the same Backpocket export does not duplicate its prompts. If an import contains an existing prompt identifier with different content, Backpocket keeps the existing prompt and reports the conflict instead of silently overwriting it.

Burn After Use and automatic expiry

In Quick Paste, select an ordinary clip, press Command-K, and choose Burn After Use. A flame marks it. The next time Backpocket successfully copies that item to the clipboard, the item is removed from Backpocket's history. Its content remains on the system clipboard.

Settings → Privacy → Erase clips after can remove ordinary clips after an hour, a day, or a week. Age is counted from the original copy in another app; reusing an item from Backpocket does not reset the timer. Favorites never expire, and prompts are never touched. Tightening the setting asks for confirmation when it would immediately remove clips.

If the shortcut is already in use

Another app may already use Shift-Command-V. Open Settings → General → Quick Paste and choose Control-Command-V, Option-Command-V, or Control-Option-V. You can also quit the conflicting app and choose Try Shortcut Again.

If a copy does not appear

  • Make sure Capture is on in the menu-bar window or Settings → Privacy.
  • Copies recognized as sensitive are skipped by default.
  • Check whether the source app is on the ignored-app list. Source attribution and ignored-app matching are best-effort.
  • Copy the item again after Backpocket is open and capture is active.

Password-manager behavior

Backpocket skips copies that a password manager or another app marks sensitive by default. If Record Password-Manager Copies is enabled in Settings → Privacy, recognized sensitive copies appear with a key badge for the current session and are excluded from saved history. They clear from Backpocket when it quits, even if favorited.

Detection depends on the source marking the copy as sensitive. A secret copied from an ordinary text field can look like regular clipboard text and may be saved. Pause capture before copying anything that must not enter history.

Manage or delete data

Settings → General lets you choose a maximum of 25 to 1,000 history items, clear history on demand, or clear history when Backpocket quits. If favorites exist, the clear flow lets you keep them or delete everything. Clearing history does not delete prompts; delete prompts from the Prompts library.

Settings → Privacy includes Reveal Data Folder, Reveal History File, and Reveal Prompts File. Use those buttons first.

The Mac App Store data folder is:

~/Library/Containers/com.qubesoftware.ClipboardHistory/Data/Library/Application Support/ClipboardHistory

The internal folder retains the earlier ClipboardHistory identifier so an upgrade cannot orphan existing data. This is an internal compatibility path, not the public product name.

Read the Privacy Report

Choose Privacy Report from Backpocket's menu-bar window, or open Settings → Privacy and scroll below the privacy settings. The report separates facts read live from this app's macOS code signature, storage and product behavior stated by Backpocket, and limits that neither the signature nor Backpocket can remove.

An “Unable to verify” result means macOS could not validate the running copy at that moment. It does not silently turn into a favorable claim.

Report a problem

Email admin@qubesoftware.com with:

  • your macOS version;
  • the Backpocket version;
  • the steps that led to the problem;
  • what you expected; and
  • what happened.

A screenshot can help, but remove or cover private clipboard content first. Do not sendhistory.json, prompts.json, prompt exports, or sensitive copied content unless you have deliberately inspected everything they contain.
